Job Description

We are looking for a Engineer Manger to join our software delivery team to use their skills and experience to guide the team of engineers. The ideal candidate will guide the successful outcomes of the team, and take a strategic view across adjacent teams for opportunities to standardise approaches to ensure high quality, high value software reaches our customers.  As well as having strong people management skills to guide and advance the learning and development of the team.  The role holder will embrace the L&G culture and model the L&G behaviours of being Straightforward, Collaborative and Purposeful.

What you'll be doing

  • Seeking opportunities to leverage engineering skills and experience across other adjacent engineering teams to ensure that we are delivering great outcomes to our customers as effectively as we can.
  • Using creative problem solving, develop elegant, simple software from complex requirements as part of an Engineering team, in order to create software which can be quickly and easily iterated upon in the future so that Legal and General can deliver high quality features to the market as soon as possible.  Ensure that the solutions developed and deployed are fit for purpose, provide appropriate business value, adhere to quality standards and align to standard engineering practices.
  • Guiding the definition of the strategy for the management of technical debt within the team to ensure that Legal & General’s systems are secure, resilient and reliable.
  • Enthusiastically promoting inspection and adaptation to improve team effectiveness & happiness, supporting changes to enhance processes and culture, to ensure that the team stays happy, productive, efficient.
  • Building a culture of mutual respect, collaboration and engagement within the team, coaching, mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers to develop and grow their skills.  Seek opportunities to effectively communicate and continuously collaborate with other team members to support smooth delivery of development activities within the sprint timebox.
  • Guiding and partnering with the 'Developer Community' to define software development standards that can be used by our teams to deliver software which meets security, compliance and other audit requirements without slowing down our software development processes.
  • Providing line management and other professional guidance to a group of between two and five engineers, to help them navigate the business and adhere to the Company's policies and procedures, including the Partnership Agreement, so that the team's business objectives are achieved consistently. Coach the team to develop their own long-term goals and objectives around software engineering quality, safety and security so that we continuously improve the software products that we create.
  • Helping your team to ensure that all customers and stakeholders are treated fairly in line with Legal & General’s principles on the Customer Experience and Treating Customers Fairly policy.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of software testing frameworks and strategies.
  • Extensive knowledge of CI/CD and associated release strategies.
  • Extensive knowledge of Agile software development methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban.
  • Microservices patterns/ frameworks, Java, Spring or Node.js, web security, REST Services, API security, Docker, Jira, Confluence, TDD, Scrum, Git
  • Writing Code - coaches teams in the techniques used to write clean code. Pairs with engineers when writing production code. Sets non-negotiable expectations in regards to engineering excellence standards. Uses data and measures to uplift code quality
  • Experience of guiding, coaching and mentoring colleagues.
  • Experience of breaking down complex requirements into achievable solutions
