Company Description

Legal & General is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor. We’ve been safeguarding people’s financial futures since 1836, aiming to build a better society for the long term by investing our customers’ money in things that make life better for everyone and create value for our shareholders.

Legal & General looks after around 700,000 institutional customers who have their retirement benefits secured with us. Our Retail division helps people enjoy a more colourful retirement, both directly and through their employers, including Lifetime Mortgages, Retirement Interest Only Mortgages and financial advice on our range of lending products. We’re also one of Europe’s largest asset managers, providing clients and partners with complex, responsible investment solutions, across public and private markets.

Job Description

Your role at a glance

The L&G Actuarial internship is an 8-week programme, running from July to August. During this time, you’ll have the chance to develop your skills, gain valuable insights, and get hands-on work experience. This is a fantastic opportunity to see if a graduate role in our actuarial team is the right fit for you.

While this internship is a stepping stone to our Actuarial Graduate Programme, please note that completing the summer programme doesn’t guarantee a graduate role. It’s perfect for those who are genuinely interested in an actuarial career and want to explore it further before applying to our graduate scheme.

You’ll be part of a dynamic cohort of interns, with plenty of opportunities to connect with your peers and colleagues through our Future Talent induction, networking events, and social activities. Joining L&G means embarking on a journey that’s anything but ordinary. So, dive in, get involved, be curious, and discover how we can help you be your best, no matter who you are.

What you'll be doing

Actuarial work is central to ensuring a profitable, well run insurance business and your work will support the success of a FTSE 100 company. Our actuaries work throughout the business measuring, predicting and managing areas of the business with the aim of giving its customers ‘value for money’.

Over the course of the internship, you will have the chance to interact with different teams, hear from senior speakers and network with your fellow interns. Some of the day-to-day activities could include:

  • Performing actuarial investigations and calculations to produce profitability information and management reports for our products.
  • Managing the production of regular experience investigations for our products in order to understand the impact of changes in mortality, morbidity, expenses and persistency.
  • Delivering the company and statutory financial reporting results to tight deadlines, including the supporting commentary.
  • Collecting and analysing market data to provide insight and aide the pricing actuaries in setting insurance prices.
  • Summarising performance of insurance products to present to senior management to aid in decision making.
  • Support the actuaries in product developments, commercial deals and pricing innovations.

But most importantly you will be learning new skills and gaining knowledge of how our business works!

Qualifications

What we're looking for

We are looking for people with an inquisitive mind and a passion for learning. No prior industry experience? No problem! We’re more interested in seeing that you have the tools to develop quickly. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Currently an undergraduate, in your penultimate year of study and on track to receive a 2:1 in your numerate degree subject.
  • Strong numerical skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Flexibility and a team-player attitude.
  • Great communication skills
  • A highly organised with the ability to prioritise effectively

Please remember, we can only accept one application per person across all our intern programmes. So, think carefully about which programme you want to apply for, as your first application will be the only one considered.
