Job Description

About Us

We are Legal & General Affordable Homes (LGAH for short) and part of Legal & General, which invests its long-term capital into areas of society where there has been a shortage of investment and innovation, focusing on growth opportunities and scale ups. You might know Legal & General for pensions, mortgages or insurance – but we aim to also be the go-to affordable housing provider across the country too.

As a National for-profit Housing Association, we bring much needed investment to the social housing sector to increase the supply and delivery of affordable housing across England. We work to improve the quality and standards of the sector, as we believe everyone deserves an affordable, quality home to call their own.

The lack of affordable housing in England means there is a real need for our work which is why we’re on the hunt for people who can help us deliver our ambitions. We aspire to deliver 6,000 new affordable homes a year and we can’t wait for you to join us on our mission.

What you'll be doing

Our graduate programme is an exciting mix and perfect for an ambitious, self-starter – giving you insight into our business and the different teams that exist.

You will have the opportunity to take in all aspects of the organisation as you rotate around the main business areas in three 6-month placements, developing your professional network and your knowledge of us as a business, as well as the wider sector.

Development

The Development placement will give you an overview of everything that goes into the construction of a home, from identifying and purchasing land, through to designing and planning a scheme and finally managing construction on site. Following this, you will learn how we market and sell homes to customers, ensuring design and specification is to the high quality we expect.

Finance

The Finance placements have been designed to give you an understanding of how the Finance team is central to business operations. Your Charging rotation will give you a fundamental insight into asset securitisation (property charging), our ability to service our debt/loan obligations, the importance of the Asset & Liabilities Register from a regulatory perspective and how we use insurance policies to mitigate risks and financial loss. During your time with the Financial Reporting and Accounting team you will contribute to regular internal and external reporting through which you will gain a strong understanding of LGAH’s Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account. Your Investment Management rotation will teach you about LGAH’s Investment Strategy and Criteria and how to apply these when reviewing an investment proposal secured by our Development colleagues. This rotation will also introduce you to a variety of reports which are used to monitor and track business activity against business targets which are fundamental to informing business decisions and strategies.

Operations

The principles of your time in the Operations directorate will be to give you an overview of the management of our customers and homes, as well as a more in-depth experience of the role that we play within these functions.

The most exciting bit? Your last 6 months will see you specialise in a part of the business that you choose to really develop your skills and start your career in a team that you’re passionate about.

You may also wish to study towards a professional qualification e.g. RICS surveying qualifications, Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) or an accounting qualification and we will always seek to support you with this.

Qualifications

First and foremost, we’re looking for people with an inquisitive mind and a desire to learn. We’re not expecting prior industry experience, but we’ll want to see that you have the tools to develop quickly.

These include:

  • 2.1 degree in any subject
  • A-Level’s (minimum grade B) or equivalent
  • Analytical mind-set
  • Great communication skills
  • Flexible and a team-player
  • Reliable, positive and a great problem solver
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise effectively

Additional Information

We believe that good businesses are built on doing the right thing and strive to do what is best for both our people and our customers. This means enabling you to bring your best self to work by giving you what you need, when you need it.

This is why we’ve designed a process that puts you in control, because we recognise that your time is valuable. At each step, make sure you take time to pause and reflect before progressing to the next, as each subsequent step will ask for a bit more of your time.

We want you to feel comfortable that this process is as fair and inclusive as possible, so please let us know if you have an illness or disability that you think may affect your performance during the process, so that reasonable adjustments can be made.

At each step we’ll give more information and clear instructions on what actions you need to take and how you can prepare.

In brief our recruitment process will include:

  • submitting an application for the role (consisting of uploading your CV, answering some specific application questions, and completing information to assess your eligibility based on your A-Level grades and degree) – December - January*
  • online testing and recorded video interview (Behavioural and Cognitive i.e. verbal and numerical reasoning) - you will be invited to complete these straight after submitting your application
  • a call with our team to answer any questions you may have about the scheme or the assessment centre - End January - February
  • an assessment centre (involving a line manager interview, presentation and group exercise) – End January - February

Whatever your role, we reward ability, performance and attitude with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Our employees have a wide range of benefits including a generous pension scheme, life assurance, 25 days’ holiday, private medical insurance, discretionary performance related bonuses, a variety of share schemes, discounts at both a huge range of high street stores and our own great products. Your hard work will be rewarded when you join us.

*Please note we recruit on a rolling basis and expect this vacancy to close before the deadline. To be in with the best chance of securing a role, please submit your application ASAP
