Building skills for life at L&G
Every apprentice arrives at L&G with different expectations and ambitions, but many describe a similar experience once they join. From day one, they’re putting theory into practice, building confidence, and developing skills that provide long-term career foundations.
With National Apprenticeship Week 2026 underway, we spoke to some of our apprentices across L&G who shared how hands‑on learning, real responsibility and supportive colleagues have helped them grow, discover new strengths and shape their futures.
Why I chose L&G
Apprenticeships offer practical experience and the opportunity to earn, learn and grow in a supportive environment.
Kishan, a Tech apprentice, working towards his Level 6 degree apprenticeship, believes L&G’s focus on culture and people, makes it a great environment to work in: “L&G's reputation speaks for itself and choosing an apprenticeship was an easy decision for me. Working within a team that has control over a platform is exciting. I’ve been trusted early on to deliver live changes."
Unique learning
What sets an apprenticeship apart is the combination of real responsibility and structured development which immerses apprentices into the workplace from day one. Apprentices apply their learning in real time, shaping their understanding through day‑to‑day tasks, projects and professional interactions.
Afeez, a Data Apprentice in Asset Management believes his apprenticeship experience is unique because of the exposure he gets to broad sets of tools and business areas across ESG as part of his programme: “The team is highly innovative and embraces a wide tech stack to build efficient, user friendly solutions for stakeholders across the business. From HTML and Python to SQL, Power Automate, and more, the variety of technologies and use cases creates a rich learning environment that’s hard to find elsewhere”.
Developing new skills
Apprenticeships help individuals build a strong foundation of transferrable skills, as well as technical ones, that last well beyond their programme. From communication and teamwork, to problem solving, resilience and confidence, apprentices feel more prepared for whatever opportunities come next.
Milene, a Cyber Security apprentice in Group, is proud of the progress she’s made on her 2-year programme: "My communication skills and my confidence have grown massively because I’m working with different teams on real business scenarios. It hasn’t always been easy, but the growth is worth it. There’s far more to learn and get involved in than I ever imagined before joining”.
Training and support
Apprenticeships give apprentices the chance to work alongside experienced colleagues, taking on responsibilities that matter. They can see the impact of their efforts first hand and feeling trusted by their team encourages them to share ideas which lead to meaningful contributions.
Kayi, a Data Apprentice in Cardiff feels grateful for the support she’s received whilst completing her Level 4 qualification: “Everyone around me is so supportive and this really exceeded my expectations! As part of my programme, I’ve had to work on my presentation skills because my role as a data apprentice involves presenting my work to stakeholders. With the right support and plenty of feedback and practice, I have become much more confident”.
