How an apprentice programme helped Ellie’s accounting career dreams come true

Posting date: 08 Feb 2024

Legal & General runs apprentice programmes to kick-start careers in Data, Technology, Accounting, Customer Service, Project Management, Business Analysis and Financial Crime. From school or college leavers to career changers, the programmes combine the opportunity to study industry-recognised qualifications with on-the-job training in meaningful employment.

Accounting apprentice Ellie Pitman shares her experience of joining the programme and her key takeaways so far.

What attracted you to do an apprenticeship at Legal & General?

I’ve always wanted to have a career in accounting, ever since I started to think about jobs, attending careers fairs and leaving school. So when I saw that Legal & General had a programme, I was eager to know more.

After reading up on the business values, and knowing more about the possibilities to progress internally, I decided to apply. I chose Legal & General as the work they do socially to improve local areas in Wales and the UK really appealed to me and sat alongside my own values.

Everything that people had to say about the business, in my research online and on the careers website, made it seem like a place that really looks after its people. That appealed massively to me.

Tell us about your time here since joining.

It’s been great! Everyone has been so lovely and helpful, right from the moment I applied.

The application process was easy to navigate. And since I joined the programme I’ve always known what the next steps are, as well as who my key contacts are in the team.

I’ve managed to network with other grads and apprentices but also the team I work in. So I feel as though I’ve got a good understanding of who’s who and how we work together.

I’ve collaborated with teams from across the business, including in London and Hove. I’ve felt as though the work I’m doing is really making a difference, which is amazing. I’ve never worked for a company as big as Legal & General. But since joining I’ve had so much help with understanding the business model, as well as support when I need it from managers and colleagues.

What are some of the best benefits of working at Legal & General?

Having the opportunity to work in a hybrid way has helped massively, and the times when I do come into the office are well spent and enjoyable. It’s great that we have such an amazing building to work in with so many well-thought-out areas for everyone to be at their best.

What are you looking forward to the most in the months ahead?

I would like to keep developing my skills within my team. I feel like I’m playing a big part in what we’re doing and I couldn’t do it without the continued support of my colleagues. I’ve absorbed a lot in a short space of time, so I’m keen to keep learning more about Legal & General as my time progresses.

I know that there are a lot of opportunities to get involved with local initiatives, in and around Cardiff. So I’d like to do that soon as it really aligns with my own values.

And I guess I’m really looking forward to just continuing to enjoy my apprenticeship, the learning, and developing professionally and personally in my rotations. I’m enjoying my time here and I want to get the most out of it that I can.
