Humanity is facing fundamental challenges, with the future of our planet hanging in the balance. As the principal investment arm of the Legal & General Group, our aim at Legal & General Capital is to generate long-term shareholder value, while helping build a better society. We seek opportunities to invest in sectors most in need of investment and innovation, such as residential housing, large-scale urban regeneration and future cities. We’re backing investment in infrastructure and clean energy, and in start-up businesses to drive innovation and growth across the UK. We’re building partnerships between the public sector and institutional investors to accelerate housing delivery, create jobs, support local businesses and transform communities. This helps to create new asset classes for Legal & General’s varied investment requirements, our partners and the wider marketplace.
This is a new role in Legal & General Capital (“LGC”)’s Clean Energy team to support the team’s continued growth. The Investment Analyst will join an investment team of 13 people making mostly equity investments into companies and projects that support the energy transition. The team typically invests in growth stage companies and into clean energy infrastructure projects at the development and construction stages, in the UK and internationally.
The successful candidate will work with an investment lead across the investment lifecycle (origination, execution and portfolio management). They will play a key role in due diligence processes, financial analysis and modelling, and preparing investment appraisals for new opportunities. They will also be instrumental in post-investment monitoring and value creation initiatives, where LGC often has board representation and/or a significant ownership stake. Our investments support wider L&G Group objectives and the Analyst will engage regularly with other divisions and specialist teams.
The Investment Analyst will work with investment leads/managers across the investment life cycle, with activity areas including:
- Researching and appraising clean energy technologies, markets and opportunities, and presenting their view, to support the development of a strong pipeline of investment opportunities.
- Coordinating and contributing to commercial, technical, financial, legal and tax due diligence work streams, including with L&G business partners and stakeholders and external advisors.
- Financial modelling and analysis to deliver a quantitative appraisal of investment opportunities, to support the assessment of valuation and potential investment returns.
- Working with Sustainability business partners to consider E(H)SG characteristics of investments.
- Contributing to the development of commercial and legal terms of potential investments.
- Assisting colleagues to produce high-quality, accurate and comprehensive draft investment papers for dissemination within the team and to investment committees.
- Complying with the internal processes and policies that apply when making, managing and exiting investments and operating within risk tolerances and other relevant limits.
- Actively monitoring the investment portfolio, including review of management information and other materials and contributing to periodic portfolio reviews and asset valuations.
- Engaging with investees, including supporting the investment lead where LGC has board representation and coordinating responses to shareholder votes.
- Contributing to wider team initiatives on an ad hoc basis.
- Being a role model and active in the development of more junior members of staff within the CE team and across LGC more generally.
Qualifications:
- Ideally Business, Economics, Engineering, Environmental Science or Mathematical Graduate with ACCA/CFA or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills:
- Familiarity with financial statement analysis, detailed cash flow modelling of deals and familiarity with key valuation techniques
- Previous experience in clean energy investments (assets, companies and/or technology) or “relevant” role directly related to investments in climate and environmental impact, ideally including different technologies and/or business models.
- Experience of managing formal Due Diligence including review of contracts, assessment of risks or otherwise specific research or analysis of companies and sectors related to energy, climate and environmental impact.
- Ability to assess risk and to work with other parties to ensure risks of an investment are understood and accepted.
- Excellent quantitative skills and ideally strong MS Excel / financial modelling skills.
- Excellent report writing skills preferably using MS Word and Powerpoint.
