Spring Start: a female-focused insight programme at L&G

Posting date: 29 Apr 2026

A two day experience for female undergraduates

In early April, we welcomed a group of first year undergraduates to our London office for Spring Start, a two day insight programme.

Now in its fourth year, the programme offers early exposure to careers in financial services beyond lectures and job descriptions, connecting students with teams from across L&G.

The focus is on helping students understand working life more clearly. This includes what it is like to work at L&G, how corporate environments operate day to day and how roles in financial services fit into the wider workplace. There is also time to meet graduates and colleagues from across the business, and to connect with other students at a similar stage.

You don't need a finance degree

This year’s group came from universities across the UK and studied a wide range of subjects, including:

 • International Relations

 • Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE)

 • Economics

 • Geography

 • History

 • Natural Sciences

Some students already had an interest in financial services, while others were exploring the sector for the first time.

That mix matters. A finance degree is not a requirement for building a career at L&G. Curiosity, motivation and a willingness to learn are just as important.

What happened over the two days

Across the two days, the programme was designed to be practical and interactive. Sessions introduced different parts of the business and created space for discussion.

During the programme, students:

  •  Heard directly from colleagues across L&G, including senior leaders and recent graduates

  • Explored topics such as sustainability, inclusion and wellbeing, reflecting issues that shape both the organisation and the industry more broadly

  • Took part in a business game where students really got to know L&G and pitched ideas for an early careers podcast

  • Joined sessions on job applications and interview skills

  • Networked through lunches, panel discussions and informal conversations

One highlight was the graduate panel, where recent L&G graduates shared how their careers have started to take shape. They spoke openly about changes in direction, moments of uncertainty and the learning that happens early on in their careers.

A tase of working life

For many attendees, this was their first time stepping inside a corporate office. For some, it was also their first extended visit to London.

The programme offered exposure to:

• A typical working day in a city office

• How teams collaborate and communicate

• What it feels like to work in a large organisation

Students left with new connections, familiar faces and a better understanding of what they enjoyed and what they might want to explore next.
