Behind the scenes: Life as a Medical Underwriter at L&G
If you’re curious, analytical and enjoy structured decision-making, medical underwriter jobs at L&G offer a rewarding career path.
Life medical underwriters play a vital role in supporting our Retail Protection customers, assessing medical information, balancing risk and making decisions that ensure customers receive fair and accurate outcomes.
We spoke to Georgia, a Life Medical Underwriter based in Cardiff with seven years’ experience at L&G, to learn more about the role.
What does a typical day look like for a Life Medical Underwriter at L&G?
"No two days look the same, but they all start with coffee", Georgia laughs.
“My mornings often begin with reviewing gastroenterology referral responses. I interpret specialist medical information and guide colleagues who are assessing cases that need more complex input.”
After that, she focuses on the core of underwriting work: reviewing customer medical reports, assessing additional evidence and determining the right outcome for each application.
“It’s a real mix of deep medical review, problem‑solving and supporting colleagues across the team. Every case is different.”
What sparked your interest in developing a gastroenterology specialism?
"I always wanted to carve out a specialist aspect of my role, but my manager really gave me the confidence to go for it", Georgia explains.
"We discussed it during our catch-ups, and she helped me shape my development plan. I also spoke to colleagues already working in specialisms, and gastro just felt like the right fit."
What did your training journey look like?
"My training began during the first lockdown. Virtual training is normal for us now, but back then it was completely new territory. The training development team made it all possible", Georgia says.
"Since then, my development has included a blend of in-person learning, virtual sessions, autonomy progression and specialist medical training. But honestly, training never really stops for an underwriter. Medical conditions evolve, customer needs change and so must we."
How has the underwriting function evolved during your seven years at L&G?
"In every direction, there’s been huge growth", Georgia reflects.
"New underwriting systems, evolving rules engines, more specialist roles and continuous opportunities to develop skills. It’s an ever-evolving function with so many ways for underwriters to grow. Whether you’re starting out or aiming to specialise, there’s support and structure to help you get there."
What’s kept you motivated to grow your career here?
"Why we do what we do is the most important thing. Life medical underwriting touches many parts of Retail Protection, especially at the claims stage.
Our decisions help support customers when they need us most. Seeing that in real time is a huge motivator."
We want to bring together our purpose and a sense of belonging, combining leadership, impact and personal growth to create something bigger.
What advice would you give someone considering life medical underwriting?
"Explore the role, ask questions and embrace curiosity. Roles in UCIT (Underwriting & Claims Initial Team) or PSU (Pre-Sales Underwriting) are also great starting points, you’ll learn about common medical conditions and how medical assessments work", Georgia advises.
"And above all, you need to enjoy problem-solving and be naturally curious. You’ll assess numerous applications a day and every single one will be different."
At L&G, we understand that the underwriting profession has evolved far beyond traditional risk assessments, and we aim to stay on top of these changes to provide innovative, fair, and customer-focused solutions.
