At Legal & General we’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace, one that helps us to better represent the customers and clients we serve.

That’s why we partner with a range of organisations to empower our colleagues to celebrate their authentic selves, challenge us all to think differently and see things from new perspectives.

Legal & General celebrates Women’s History Month

As part of our Women's History Month we welcomed Black Women in Asset Management to join us for a special event, Ascending with Purpose: Elevating the Careers of Black Women in Finance, for professionals in the financial services sector.

The event, aimed at helping attendees focus on their career acceleration and talent development, included presentations from our Head of Talent, Rachel Rose, and an Executive Coach, Martin Sealy on propelling your career forward.

The 120-strong audience were also rapt as they heard from Dr. Doyin Atewologun, who talked about creating inclusive environments where authenticity flourishes.

We closed the event with a panel session featuring our own employees, sharing their career journeys - the highs and challenges faced, and valuable tips on navigating the corporate landscape.

Our partnership with Black Women in Asset Management

After the event we caught up with the host and LGIM D&I Partner, Jacquline Alcindor and Head of Talent, Rachel Rose on why it’s so important that we come together for sessions like this, and why working somewhere like L&G has helped them.

“It is important for L&G to support events like this as Black women can face the intersectionality of both racism and sexism in the workplace and often do not have strong allies at work” said Jacquline.

“Events like this showcase the Black talent in the workplace and build allyship. It also celebrates those who are achieving in a positive way.”

“The more we actively create opportunities like this, the more it will become ‘the way we do things around here',” added Rachel. “We are an inclusive employer but are still on a journey and need to be attracting and supporting more events aimed at under-represented groups.”

Continuing to build a culture where everyone can thrive

“Our actions speaks louder than words”, added Jacquline. “How we act in the workplace allows everyone to be their authentic self - creating that sense of belonging for everyone to feel included.”

Rachel reflected: “Sitting on stage at the event, as one of a handful of white people in a room of over 120 people, I suddenly had a dawning realisation about how it must feel at many corporate events to be one of the only Black women in a predominantly white working environment – that it must be daunting at times.”

In closing Jacquline said:

“At L&G we are trying to create the right culture where everyone can thrive. We are on the journey to inclusion; everyone has a role to play, and we welcome everyone into the L&G fold. Since joining I have met so many like-minded people. For me it is just a great place to work, it is no wonder we are Britain’s Most Admired Company.”
