If you’re searching for claims assessor jobs in the UK or wondering how to become a claims assessor, it’s not always clear what the role really involves day to day.

At L&G, being a Claims Assessor in Group Income Protection is about more than reviewing policies. It’s about understanding people, making fair decisions and supporting individuals through periods when they’re unable to work.

George joined L&G in 2025 after starting out in hospitality, acting and other customer-facing roles. In just over a year, he’s built strong technical expertise, learned to manage sensitive and complex cases, and taken on new responsibilities within the team.

We sat down with him to learn what the role is really like and how a typical day unfolds.

What does a Claims Assessor do in Group Income Protection?

George spends his days reviewing evidence, assessing absences and determining whether a claim meets policy terms. But the role is far more collaborative than people often realise.

“It’s a very collaborative role. You gather the right evidence, speak with other teams and work together to make a fair and consistent decision”, he explains. “It’s analytical, people-focused and impactful.”

This is what makes claims assessor roles unique; they combine analytical thinking with collaboration, requiring you to balance policy knowledge with real-life situations.

How did you become a Claims Assessor?

George didn’t initially plan to work in claims or in insurance at all. After studying Acting at university, he spent almost seven years working in hospitality before moving to London, where he stepped into an insurance sales role for the flexibility it offered.

“It didn’t take me long to realise I’m not a natural salesperson”, he laughs. “But moving into Customer Services was a turning point. I enjoyed explaining policies and supporting customers, and it showed me there were roles in insurance that fit my strengths much better.”

George’s journey shows there’s no single route into claims assessor jobs. Skills from customer service, communication and problem-solving can all be valuable starting points.

What’s the most rewarding part of a Claims Assessor role?

“I enjoy being able to support people when they can’t work, but I really love being part of the process of helping people return to work after a period of absence." It feels like you can genuinely help to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Aside from that, the flexibility of the role is something I’m grateful for; being able to make my day work best for me is ideal.”

For many people exploring careers in insurance, this balance of purpose and flexibility is what makes the role stand out.

What skills do you need to be a Claims Assessor?

“I’ve always been quite analytical. I enjoy puzzles and problem-solving, and the role helps me develop those skills.

I’ve also strengthened my presentation skills, as there is a lot of collaboration. Being able to update colleagues on the details of a case clearly and concisely ensures you make the most of your time and theirs.”

If you’re considering how to become a claims assessor, key skills include:

  • Analytical thinking and decision-making
  • Communication and stakeholder management
  • Attention to detail
  • Confidence working with complex information

What career progression is available in Claims at L&G?

“During my first year at L&G, I received a sign-off which gave me the ability to accept and decline claims within my own authority (within limits).

I’ve also taken on responsibility as the lead assessor on a scheme within my team.

I’ve tried to focus on learning my role, but it feels like there’s always an opportunity to look ahead and consider what might be next.”

This kind of structured progression is a key part of claims assessor careers at L&G, where development happens at a pace that builds both confidence and capability.

What training and support do new Claims Assessors receive?

“The training team is fantastic. They really know their stuff and the initial training programme helped me feel settled quickly.

Once I started assessing live claims, there were plenty of opportunities for support. At first, my work was checked and signed off, which gave me the confidence to try without worrying about making a mistake.

The role is very collaborative, so with complex cases you get input from colleagues in other teams which helps you know you’re making the right decision.”
